Abstract:

History and Objectives: The 2019-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has a devastating psychosocial impact on the entire human race. Substance use disorders (SUD) are a significant risk factor for infection in the marginalized group, and those with SUD are also more likely to have increased psychosocial load. This article examines the complex reciprocal relationship between addiction and COVID-19.
Methods: The following search phrases are used to find relevant articles on PubMed and Google Scholar: "COVID-19," "SARS-CoV2," "Pandemic," "Addiction," "Opioid," "Alcohol," "Smoking," "Addiction Psychiatry," "Deaddiction," "Substance use disorders," and "Behavioral addiction." A few newspaper articles about addiction and COVID-19 have also been provided for context.
Context and Objectives Methods: The key terms "COVID-19," "SARS-CoV2," "Pandemic," "Addiction," "Opioid," "Alcohol," "Smoking," "Addiction Psychiatry," "Deaddiction," "Substance use disorders," and "Behavioral addiction" are used to search PubMed and Google Scholar. As appropriate for the situation, a few newspaper articles about COVID-19 and addiction have also been included.
Conclusion: The two pandemics of COVID-19 and addiction are about to collide, posing a serious threat to public health. While every effort must be made to raise awareness of the negative consequences of SUD on the prognosis for COVID-19, the restart of drug addiction programs and improved access to prescription medications are urgent demands.
