Abstract:

Infantile colic (IC) is a prevalent condition that affects up to 73% of newborns worldwide, and on the other hand, 25.6% of Indian babies are affected. It accounts for 10% to 20% of pediatrician visits in the first three months of an infant's life. Infantile colic negatively impacts both infants and their caregivers quality of life. It is characterized by periods of excessive sobbing and discomfort in otherwise healthy infants, which leaves parents extremely anxious. Infantile colic is still a diagnosis of exclusion and, therefore, requires rigorous evaluation to distinguish it from other pediatric illnesses that present with similar symptoms. A strategy including behavioral counseling, soothing techniques, and pharmacological treatment is needed to effectively manage colic pain. Another crucial aspect of tackling infantile colic is addressing gut dysbiosis. Probiotics, especially strains like BB-12, correct gut dysbiosis and promote healthy gut microbiota, which has been found to reduce colic symptoms; they are essential in managing infantile colic. To alleviate infantile colic symptoms and enhance the family’s quality of life, comprehensive management techniques are crucial.
